CNN fired comedian Kathy Griffin on Wednesday after a photo she posted of herself holding the fake bloodied severed head of President Donald Trump went viral.
Griffin had hosted the network's New Year's Eve program with Anderson Cooper for a decade, according to The Wrap
“CNN has terminated our agreement with Kathy Griffin to appear on our New Year’s Eve program,” a network spokesperson told TheWrap in a statement. Co-host Cooper tweeted to distance himself from Griffin, saying, "For the record, I am appalled by the photo shoot Kathy Griffin took part in. It is clearly disgusting and completely inappropriate.
"We found what she did disgusting and offensive," a CNN spokesperson said a day earlier. "We are pleased to see she has apologized and asked that the photos be taken down."
Earlier Tuesday Griffin was dumped by toilet stool company Squatty Potty. She had signed a partnership with the company May 10 and was featured in one of its commercials.
“We were shocked and disappointed to learn about the image Ms. Griffin shared today, it was deeply inappropriate and runs contrary to the core values our company stands for,” wrote CEO Bobby Edwards in a statement sent to Fox News. “In response, Squatty Potty has suspended its ad campaign featuring Ms. Griffin. We have acted swiftly and decisively to demonstrate our commitment to a culture of decency, civility, and tolerance.”
Democratic Sen. Al Franken (Minn.) stands by Griffin, heh told CNN. Franken and Griffin have a book event scheduled together in July.
