It was reported on Monday that media mogul Rupert Murdoch, a long-time friend of President Donald Trump, told the president that White House chief strategist Steve Bannon needs to be removed from his position within the Trump administration.

The New York Times reported that Bannon is currently in “a kind of internal exile” at the White House, and added that Trump has been considering his ouster for “months.”

Bannon came under fire over the weekend when allegations emerged that the chief strategist was responsible for White House leaks.

The New York Times also added that Bannon was in the president’s ear over the weekend during the Charlottesville terror attack, and reportedly warned the president not to “criticize far-right activists” in fear of sabotaging his support base.

Despite his marginalization, Mr. Bannon consulted the president repeatedly over the weekend as Mr. Trump struggled to respond to the neo-Nazi rally in Charlottesville, Va. In general, Mr. Bannon has cautioned the president not to criticize far-right activists too severely for fear of antagonizing a small but energetic part of his base.
