Skier Lindsey Vonn Announces Retirement

Champion skier Lindsey Vonn has announced that she will be retiring from the sport.

According to The New York Post:

The mind was willing, but the body wasn’t.

Lindsey Vonn couldn’t ignore the pain any longer, and so rather than continue skiing through December as planned, she announced her retirement on Friday after this month’s world championships in Sweden.

After being unable to finish a race in Italy last month, Vonn, the women’s all-time leader in World Cup victories, realized it was time to call it quits, the pain in her knees too much to keep going.

“it’s been an emotional 2 weeks making the hardest decision of my life, but I have accepted that I cannot continue ski racing,” she wrote on Instagram. “I will compete at the World Championships in Downhill and SG [super-G] next week in Are, Sweden and they will be the final races of my career.

The skier revealed that she had surgery after last season and the recovery didn’t go the way she had hoped which was part of her decision to retire.
