ABC suspended Whoopi Goldberg from ‘The View’ for two weeks, a day after she claimed “the Holocaust isn’t about race” on Monday’s show.
ABC News President Kim Godwin announced that Goldberg had been suspended for “her wrong and hurtful comments” and the punishment was “effective immediately.”
“While Whoopi has apologized, I’ve asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments. The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends, family, and communities,” Godwin said on Tuesday.
Goldberg faced fierce critical backlash after insisting that the Holocaust was about “man’s inhumanity to man,” and not race, because Jews are “white groups of people.”
She doubled down later that day in an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” when she claimed she didn’t “want to fake apologize,” because “people misunderstood” what she meant.
“As a Black person, I think of race as being something that I can see. So I see you and I know what race you are,” she remarked. “I was saying, you can’t call this racism. This was evil. This wasn’t based on the skin. You couldn’t tell who was Jewish. They had to delve deeply to figure out.”
Goldberg apologized on Twitter later that night and again on Tuesday’s show, but #firewhoopi began trending on social media the same day. Insiders at ABC and parent Disney were also reportedly upset with her apology and the lack of repercussions.
“Why does Whoopi seemingly get a pass when others don’t? Perhaps this time she won’t. Many at the network — including her fellow hosts — believe Whoopi is too controversial now for the show,” a source divulged.
Piers Morgan was quick to point out that Sharon Osbourne was terminated from her daytime talk show for much less. “Sharon Osbourne was fired from The Talk for defending me against a fake charge of racism,” he tweeted.
“Whoopi Goldberg said on The View yesterday that the Holocaust ‘wasn’t about race’, which for Jewish people is about as racist a comment as anyone could make,” he continued. “Bet she doesn’t lose her job.”
Caryn Johnson changed her name to Whoopi Goldberg – without any apparent Jewish heritage – but wants us to think she didn’t know Jewish people are a race? Ridiculous.
