California’s former Republican Governator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, compared not wearing masks to running a red light, “then you kill someone else and then it is your doing.”
In a Wednesday interview, the “Terminator” star tackled COVID-19 infection prevention and shared that he embraces science.
“People should know, there is a virus here, it kills people, and the only way we prevent it is to get vaccinated, wear masks, do social distancing… And not just to think about well my freedom is being kind of disturbed here.”
“No, screw your freedom,” Schwarzenegger continued. “Because with freedom comes obligations and responsibilities. We cannot just say, ‘I have the right to do X, Y and Z.’ When you affect other people, that is when it gets serious.”
He likened the obligation to stop the spread of coronavirus variants to stopping at traffic lights.
“You cannot say, ‘No one is going to tell me that I’m going to stop here, that I have to stop at this traffic light here. I’m going to go right through it,’” he went on. “Then you kill someone else, and then it is your doing.”
“So, this is the same thing with the virus,” Schwarzenegger remarked. “You cannot go and not put the mask on because when you breathe, you can infect someone else. And you can infect someone that then gets sick and may die.”
He believes Americans must work together to “lick” the virus and put politics aside. “Yeah you have the freedom to wear no mask,” he concluded. “But you know something, you’re a schmuck for not wearing a mask… It’s just that simple.”

The problem is that not wearing a mask is not the same as running a red light. Some people cannot wear masks for a number of reasons and if people are fearful, they can take responsibility for their own safety by being vaccinated, wearing an N95 mask, social distancing, and/or staying at home.
This is not just a medical or public health issue, the science is ever evolving, and it was politicized from the beginning. If this was Ebola, which has a 50-60% mortality rate, I might feel differently…but, while serious, the mortality rate is under 1%. Panicked people make poor decisions.

It’s being risk-averse versus risk management. Those who are risk-averse can’t take any sort of risk to get the disease. Those people need to hunker down, get other vaccines, social distance, etc. etc. Those who are going to risk manage means that the chances of them dying from the disease is extremely extremely low. As far as the threats of harming somebody else now, whoever you come in contact with has the same choice of being vaccinated or not. If they’re risk management and they decide not to then they roll the dice. If it’s a risk-averse person they probably are already vaccinated. Isn’t that the point of getting the vaccine is to not get sick in the first place? That’s what we are being told right. So the risk-averse group can’t mandate those demands on the risk management group just as the risk management group don’t tell the risk-averse people not to get vaccinated, etc. etc. It’s two sides of the coin at the same issue. You should still have the choice. You are no longer hurting anybody though. Not with a vaccine out there.
