The ‘Golden State Killer’ who remained at large for decades after a vicious rape and murder spree in the 70’s and 80’s, was sentenced to multiple life sentences on Friday.
Who is the Golden State Killer?
Joseph James DeAngelo was a former Navy serviceman in the during the Vietnam War and a police officer for California for most of the 1970’s.
Family life
He married Sharon Huddle, a Sacramento divorce attorney, in 1973 and they had three daughters before separating in 1991. They remained legally married, but estranged until she filed for divorce after DeAngelo was charged with eight counts of first degree murder in April of 2018.
Huddle made a victim impact statement at DeAngelo’s sentencing hearing: “I now live everyday with the knowledge of how he attacked and severely damaged hundreds of innocent people’s lives and murdered 13 innocent people.”
Early life of crime
A series of 120 burglaries in the Central Valley area of California during the early seventies were considered to be criminal training ground for DeAngelo, who was then known as the Visalia Ransacker and Cordova Cat Burglar. The burglaries often involved vandalization of possessions and women’s undergarments, rather than theft of high value items.
In 1975, DeAngelo grew bold enough to attempt the kidnapping of a sixteen-year-old cheerleader. Her father, professor Claude Snelling, saved his daughter, but was shot twice and killed. DeAngelo plead guilty to his murder in 2020.
Snelling’s daughter, Elizabeth Hupp, spoke about her father at DeAngelo’s sentencing. “My dad died saving my life that night and he is my hero.”
East Area Rapist
DeAngelo’s crimes escalated to rape when he moved to Sacramento. He became known as the East Area Rapist, committing 50 known rapes and two murders between 1976 and 1979. He often stalked women on trails or targeted them alone in their homes, but eventually moved onto couples. He was known for forcing his female victim to tie up her significant other, before he would rape her repeatedly.
Original Night Stalker
DeAngelo moved to Southern California, where his taste for violence increased. He was dubbed the Original Night Stalker when he started killing victims by gunshot or bludgeoning, rather than letting them go. He committed ten known murders, where eight of the victims were couples, between 1979 and 1986.
Calls to authorities and victims
DeAngelo reveled in his crimes, taunting police with claims of his misdeeds and further tormenting victims with phone calls after the fact.
DNA evidence
Authorities officially connected the crimes of the East Area Rapist to the murders of the Original Night Stalker in 2001. The term Golden State Killer was coined in 2013.

Investigation
In 2016, the FBI used genetic genealogy to link DNA evidence from the Golden State Killer’s crimes to compile a 1,000 person family tree that eventually ruled out all suspects accept for DeAngelo.
Arrest
DeAngelo was arrested on April 24, 2018 and charged with eight counts of first-degree murder. In May prosecutors added four additional murder charges.
Trial
While prosecutors were pursuing the death penalty, DeAngelo took a deal to avoid it in June. He pleaded guilty to 13 charges of kidnapping and murder.
Sentencing
Friday DeAngelo listened to victim impact statements and was condemned to multiple consecutive life sentences in prison without parole.
In response to his sentencing DeAngelo simply said: “I’ve listened to all your statements. Each one of them, and I’m truly sorry to everyone I have hurt.”

Sin is far reaching beyond the borders of the crime, as we can see with this affect on Ms. Huddle. I sympathize that it had such a devastating affect on her and probably the children. Not all people are so devious and I hope she regains her confidence in the human race.
