The Duchess of Sussex got defensive when Mariah Carey called her out for having “diva moments” in a recent interview.
Markle featured the “All I Want For Christmas Is You” singer in the latest episode of her podcast “Archetypes.”
Carey said that when someone is called a diva “they mean you’re a successful woman, usually. But also, and forgive me if we’re not allowed to say the B-word, but a B-I-T-C-H. Like, it’s not okay for you to be a boss. It’s not okay for you to be a strong woman, you know what I mean?”
Markle pointed out that people need to be aware “that there might be this persona, and yes the diva thing we can play into,” but it’s not something that she can “connect to.”
Carey abruptly cut her off, “You give us diva moments sometimes, Meghan, don’t even act like…” Before Markle shot back, “What kind of diva moments did I give you?”
The “Honey” singer seemed to sense the British royal’s discomfort, because she quickly explained that she meant that she didn’t mean her attitude. “It’s the visual. It’s the visual. A lot of it is the visual.”
Post interview, Markle admitted that Carey was right to backtrack. “She must have felt my nervous laughter, and … she jumped right in to make sure I was crystal clear that when she said diva, she was talking about the way I dress, the posture, the clothing,” she revealed.
The Duchess said the comment stopped her in her “tracks” and she was worried that her “girl crush” on the pop star was “coming to a quick demise.”
“She meant diva as a compliment, but I heard it as a dig,” Markle stated. “That moment, as she explained to me, she meant it as chic, as inspirational.”
