Former President Donald Trump slammed the Biden administration for proposing a prisoner swap with Russia that would involve trading “an absolute killer” for WNBA star Brittney Griner.
“She knew you don’t go in there loaded up with drugs, and she admitted it,” Trump said on Saturday’s episode of The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show. “I assume she admitted it without too much force because it is what it is, and it certainly doesn’t seem like a very good trade, does it?”
Griner was arrested at the Moscow airport in February, when she ignored the State Department’s warnings about entering Russia during the Ukraine conflict, and was detained for bringing marijuana vape cartridges into the country.
The two-time Olympian claimed she ignored the travel advisories because she didn’t want to let her teammates on Russia’s UMMC Ekaterinburg, which she plays for during the WNBA offseason. Griner pleaded guilty to the charges and faces up to 16 years in prison, but recently testified that the translator did not fully explain the documents she signed during her arrest.
According to reports, the Biden administration has proposed a prisoner swap for Griner and Marine Corps veteran Paul Whelan, who was convicted of espionage in 2018, for Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer that is serving a 25 year prison term, after he was convicted for conspiracy to kill Americans in 2011.
“He’s absolutely one of the worst in the world, and he’s gonna be given his freedom because a potentially spoiled person goes into Russia loaded up with drugs,” Trump said about Bout and Griner. “She went in there loaded up with drugs into a hostile territory where they’re very vigilant about drugs.”
“They don’t like drugs. And she got caught. And now we’re supposed to get her out — and she makes, you know, a lot of money, I guess,” he concluded. “We’re supposed to get her out for an absolute killer and one of the biggest arms dealers in the world. Killed many Americans. Killed many people.”
