Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was less than thrilled when eco-activist actor Leonardo DiCaprio inserted himself into the country’s politics.
“The Tapajós region of Brazil’s Pará state is the target of industrialized illegal mining,” the “Titanic” star began in a tweet storm. “Which would leave massive destruction and is threatening to erase years of archaeological discoveries.”
He shared a link to an article that stated: “Millennia of Indigenous history faces erasure as mining grips Brazil’s Tapajós.” In a follow-up post, he encouraged Brazil’s youth to register to vote.
“Brazil is home to the Amazon and other ecosystems critical to climate change,” he continued. “What happens there matters to us all and youth voting is key in driving change for a healthy planet.”
DiCaprio also issued a statement of gratitude to “the heroes of democracy” in Brazil, who were helping register young voters on Monday. Bolsonaro, who has allowed extreme deforestation of the rainforest during his presidency, reacted poorly to the “Departed” star getting involved in the race that will determine if he gets another term.
“Thanks for your support, Leo! It’s really important to have every Brazilian voting in the coming elections,” he snapped back on Twitter. “Our people will decide if they want to keep our sovereignty on the Amazon or be ruled by crooks who serve special foreign interests. Good job in ‘The Revenant.’”

Bolsonaro continued to lash out at the actor during a speech at Brazil’s Alvorada Palace on Tuesday.
“Now, DiCaprio has to know that it was the very president of the World Trade Organization who said that without Brazilian agribusiness, the world would be hungry,” he remarked. “So, DiCaprio better keep his mouth shut instead of talking nonsense.”
