Controversial comedian Dave Chappelle was assaulted on stage while telling jokes at the Los Angeles Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday.
Chappelle was doing a comedy set at the Netflix is a Joke festival, when a man charged onto the stage and tackled him. Event security, and actor Jamie Foxx, who was inexplicably wearing a sheriff’s hat, managed to subdue the attacker and drag him off stage.

The comedian, who appeared to be unharmed, immediately cracked a joke about the attack. “It was a trans man,” he deadpanned.
Chappelle faced a firestorm of calls for his cancelation last year, after offending the transgender community during his Netflix special “The Closer.”
“Now, I am not saying that to say trans women aren’t women, I am just saying that those p*****s that they got … you know what I mean? I’m not saying it’s not p***y, but it’s Beyond P***y or Impossible P***y,” he joked at the time. “It tastes like p***y, but that’s not quite what it is, is it? That’s not blood. That’s beet juice.”
After the onstage scuffle, the comedian thanked Foxx for offering his aid, while he was watching the performance from the wings. “Shout out to Jamie Foxx by the way. Whenever you’re in trouble, Jamie Foxx will show up in a sheriff’s hat.”
“I thought that was part of the show, I didn’t know what the f***…” Foxx trailed off. “I grabbed the back of that n**** head. His hair was spongy. Absorbent,” Chappelle remarked about the assailant.
“Listen, I just want to say, this man is an absolute genius. We’ve got to make sure we protect him at all times,” Foxx continued. “For every comedian who comes out here, this means everything. You’re a genius. You’re a legend, I enjoyed myself thoroughly, and we’re not going to let nothing happen to you.”
Chris Rock, who was the opener of the event came back on stage and quipped, “it was Will Smith.”
The attack was no laughing matter, police confirmed that the man was armed with a gun and a knife when he went after Chappelle. He was injured in the scuffle and taken to a local hospital by ambulance.
