Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred was not warmly welcomed by fans of the Atlanta Braves after their World Series win.
The Braves crushed the Astros 7-0 during Game 6 on Houston’s home turf on Tuesday night, and Manfred appeared to present the World Series trophy to the team.
The crowd cheered as the winners were introduced, but as soon as Manfred took the microphone, a chorus of boos rained down from the crowd.
“After a great 2021 season and a dramatic postseason, it’s my honor and pleasure to present the commissioner’s to the World Series champion Atlanta Braves and their CEO Terry McGuirk,” he uncomfortably spat out as jeers nearly drowned out his speech.
As soon as he handed off the trophy, the crowd began cheering. Manfred’s falling out with Atlanta fans was by no means shocking, he’s the reason their city lost the All-Star Game.
Georgia infuriated liberals in the spring by making election reforms that expanded early voting and required voters to verify absentee ballots with a photo ID. Manfred retaliated by taking away the Atlanta Braves All-Star Game hosting duties and giving the honor to the Colorado Rockies.
“I have decided that the best way to demonstrate our values as a sport is by relocating this year’s All-Star Game and MLB Draft,” he said in an April press release. “Major League Baseball fundamentally supports voting rights for all Americans and opposes restrictions at the ballot box. Fair access to voting continues to have our game’s unwavering support.”
The Braves released a statement that they were “deeply disappointed” by the decision, but got the last laugh when they advanced to and won the World Series. Fans were thrilled by the turn of events, and think Manfred is getting “karma” for relocating the All-Star Game.
“Rob Manfred having to hand the @Braves the World Series Trophy last night is straight KARMA for f***ing them out of the All-Star game,” one fan tweeted. “@MLB needs to thank the @Braves for overcoming the hypocrisy and making this an epic World Series.”
“Braves winning the World Series is the perfect bitch slap to Manfred,” snarked another. “Moving the All-Star Game out of Georgia just for ATL to win it all with even more fans watching and in attendance. Hahaha.”
