Tuesday Update: Cynthia Nixon Thinks Shoplifters Should Go Free, Tarzan Star Dead In Plane Crash, Matthew McConaughey Is Pro-Mask

Crime Without Punishment

“Sex and the City” star Cynthia Nixon sparked Twitter backlash for posting that shoplifters shouldn’t be criminally charged, after complaining that her local drugstore was attempting to deter theft by “locking up” basic household items.  

The former New York gubernatorial candidate was slammed by Thomas Kenniff, who is running for Manhattan DA. “Why don’t you leave the doors to your posh co-op unlocked, and the closets and freezer stocked. Those in need can come help themselves?” He replied.  

The CVS on my corner has started locking up basic items like clothing detergent.

Mask Hesitancy

Maybe Texas gubernatorial candidate, actor Matthew McConaughey, thinks America should be masking up and the political divide over face-covering policies is senseless.

“I think the best example, for my mind, this last year is the damn dispute over the masks that got politicized,” McConaughey said. “I’m going, ‘come on man. I’m not believing you’re really scared of this little cotton thing. I’m not believing you really feel that takes away your identity and your freedom.’ This is a short-term inconvenience for long-term freedom.”

  He’s disappointed that more Americans aren’t interested in protecting one another. “There’s no data that says it’s not a good thing,” he continued. “There’s no data that says it’s harmful. Let’s all take one for the team here. We like to say we wanna take one for the team. We want to say ‘oh, the value of a human life is the epitome…’ no it’s not. We won’t admit it.”

RIP

“Tarzan” star Joe Lara died in a plane crash with his wife Gwen and five others on Saturday. Their Cessna C501 plane was headed to Palm Beach, FL from a Tennessee airport when it went down into a popular fishing lake 20 miles North of Nashville. Lara was 58 years old.  

“The Love Boat” captain Gavin MacLeod died on Saturday at age 90.  He also starred on the long-running “The Mary Tyler Moore Show ” as writer Murray Slaughter for the comedy’s entire 168 episode run. His cause of death was not revealed.

“Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head” singer B.J. Thomas passed away from complications of lung cancer at his home in Arlington, Texas on Saturday. The Grammy-winning singer scored well known hits “I Just Can’t Help Believing,” and “Hooked on a Feeling,” during his storied career. He was 78.  

Media Diss

Two-time U.S. Open champion Naomi Osaka withdrew from the French Open on Sunday after being fined $15,000 by the tennis tournament for refusing to speak with the media during the annual event.  

“I think now the best thing for the tournament, the other players and my well-being is that I withdraw so that everyone can get back to focusing on the tennis going on in Paris,” Osaka wrote in a lengthy Twitter post.  “I never wanted to be a distraction and I accept that my timing was not ideal and my message could have been clearer.”

Osaka further detailed that she had been battling depression since the 2018 U.S. Open, and was trying to practice “self-care” by skipping press lines that trigger “huge waves of anxiety,” prior to matches. 

She bowed out after defeating Patricia Maria Tig in the first round of the Grand Slam tournament and announced she would be taking an undetermined amount of “time away from the court.” 

Monitored

Shia LeBeouf, who once starred as an ankle-monitored teen on house arrest in the 2007 hit “Disturbia,” has been sentenced to wear an alcohol monitoring device for getting into a physical altercation with a man in October of 2020. 

LeBeouf was charged with two misdemeanors for battery and theft, but will avoid jail time by complying with the judge’s orders to stay 100 yards away from his victim and getting anger management treatment. 

Memorial Day Support

“Transformers” actress Megan Fox teamed up with Army Veteran Colin Wayne to raise $1 million in product donations for Wayne-owned Redline Steel’s “Operation Memorial Giveback.” Last year, the pair raised more than $2.5 million in donations. 

“Being able to team-up with Colin for a second year in a row and his pledge of at least $1 million in products is an honor,” Fox said. “Memorial Day is all about honoring and remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, and this give back is one I stand fully behind. I want to thank Colin for his service and continuing to put people over profit.”
