Biden broke his 118 day streak of avoiding the mainstream media for an easy interview on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Wednesday night.
Biden launched straight into gun control, pointing at conservatives for hindering efforts off the bat. “A lot of it is intimidation by the NRA. Look, this is not your father’s Republican Party. This is a MAGA party,” he remarked.
The president shot down Kimmel’s question about issuing an executive order, with the claim that former President Donald Trump “passed those out like Halloween candy.”
“But what I don’t want to do, and I’m not being facetious, I don’t want to emulate Trump’s abuse of the constitution and constitutional authority,” he added.
Biden contradicted himself later in the interview when he hinted that he could employ executive orders if the Supreme Court overrules Roe V. Wade. He said the decision would spark a “mini revolution” and doesn’t believe “the country will stand for it.”
The 46th president also accused the GOP of playing dirty, while lauding his own fairness. “I often get asked, ‘the Republican’s don’t play it square, why do you play it square?'” he said. “If we do the same thing they do, our democracy would literally be in jeopardy. That’s not a joke!”
The Commander-in-Chief got a solid endorsement from “Goodfellas” star Robert De Niro, who agreed that he sleeps better at night with Biden in office.
“He’s, you know, he got us into calm waters, that was always the idea. He’s doing a very good job. It’s a tough one, I couldn’t imagine,” he told Stephen Colbert during a “The Late Show” appearance on Tuesday. “I can’t imagine how difficult it is. I have decisions in my personal life, but what he goes through is a hundred times that.”
De Niro said that despite record gas prices and inflation, Biden was doing his best. “And so, no, he’s doing the best he can, and uh, we got to get through a tough period, period,” the actor added.
