Users on Twitter have initiated a viral conversation regarding the unusual yellow skyline of New York City, drawing parallels to various dystopian movies including Blade Runner 2049, Dune, Enemy, and others characterized by a yellowish haze in their skies. A common theme in these films, a yellow sky is often an ominous sign.

The abnormal yellow skies over NYC are attributed to numerous wildfires ablaze in Canada. Consequently, a substantial portion of the U.S. East Coast is being inundated with a haze cloud emanating from these fires, with over 100 million Americans likely to be affected. The resulting haze has caused New York City’s air quality to plunge, making it the worst globally for parts of Wednesday. Astonishingly, the air quality was even inferior to that experienced after the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

Quotes from the Twitter discussion include:

“NYC looks like Blade Runner 2049 today”

“Top: Yesterday in Manhattan

Bottom: Enemy (2013) directed by Denis Villeneuve”

The eerie yellow skyline of New York City, reminiscent of scenes from numerous dystopian films, has ignited a widespread discussion on Twitter. The yellow skyline has led to not only a visual spectacle that resonates with cinematic narratives, but also a serious health concern, with air quality levels in New York City reaching unprecedented lows. As the effects of these wildfires continue to ripple across the American East Coast, impacting over 100 million people.
