Taylor Swift, who rarely tours and has been one of the leading entertainers throughout the past two decades, recently announces she’ll be going on tour for the first time since 2018. Swift’s more recent planned tour in 2020 to promote her newest album, “Lover,” her seventh studio album, was canceled due to COVID-19.
Her 2022 tour, “The Eras Tour,” has been filled with controversy due to Ticketmaster’s decision to sell over two million tickets during pre-sales for the event. Her fan base was largely left with no other options than to buy tickets through scalper and resale, which were hundreds, or at times even thousands of dollars more than the original selling price of the tickets. Similar to the Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, Yeezy and Jordan sneakers, or other limited items with high demand, the websites nearly immediately sell out of the initial stock, and customers who are actually in demand and not looking to make money on the resale are left play multiple times the initial price.
Taylor Swift fans were outraged with Ticketmaster for selling a large amount of tickets to concerts through pre-sale, and leaving next to nothing for genuine fans. Ticketmaster ran the operation of ticket sales poorly in the eyes of many, and since they’re not the ones reselling the tickets, they had no incentive to sell to people who choose to spam the site and buy all the tickets to make a profit.
Eventually, after days of silence and thousands are angered fans, anger started to be directed towards Taylor Swift for her silence surrounding the Ticketmaster controversy.
Friday, Taylor Swift broke her silence by saying:
“It goes without saying that I’m extremely protective of my fans,” Swift wrote on social media.
“We’ve been doing this for decades together and over the years, I’ve brought so many elements of my career in house. I’ve done this SPECIFICALLY to improve the quality of my fans’ experience by doing it myself with my team who care as much about my fans as I do. It’s really difficult for me to trust an outside entity with these relationships and loyalties, and excruciating for me to just watch mistakes happen with no recourse.”
“There are a multitude of reasons why people had such a hard time trying to get tickets and I’m trying to figure out how this situation can be improved moving forward. I’m not going to make excuses for anyone because we asked them, multiple times, if they could handle this kind of demand and we were assured they could. It’s truly amazing that 2.4 million people got tickets, but it really pisses me off that a lot of them feel like they went through several bear attacks to get them.”
“And to those who didn’t get tickets, all I can say is that my hope is to provide more opportunities for us to all get together and sing these songs. Thank you for wanting to be there. You have no idea how much that means.”
