Due to its planned location at Trump National Doral Miami, Jordan Poyer, the All-Pro Strong Safety of the Buffalo Bills, was forced to cancel a charitable golf tournament. In a video message, Poyer expressed his disappointment as sponsors and golfers withdrew from the event at the last minute due to the negative response surrounding the chosen venue, as the venue is owned by former President Donald Trump.
Poyer expressed:
“I regret to inform you that my annual Golf Charity Event in South Florida, originally scheduled for July 10th at the Blue Monster at Trump National in Doral, has been rescheduled for next year.”
“Unfortunately, the location of the event led to a few sponsors and golfers withdrawing at the last minute due to external pressures.”
“They decided they didn’t want to take part in my tournament in which they took part in last year because of where it’s at, at Trump National Doral in South Florida,”
“ECMC decided they can no longer take the pressure from up top, from the people above them and it probably has nothing to do with ECMC at all.”
Avalon Sports, Poyer’s sports agency, released an official statement explaining that the event would be postponed due to the political controversy surrounding a venue owned by Trump, despite the event’s charitable nature. It is important to note that canceling an event due to politically-motivated backlash should not be justified. Consequently, the charitable event will now be postponed until next year, hindering their efforts to make a positive impact solely due to disagreements with Trump on a political level.

The ECMC Foundation, the beneficiary of Poyer’s tournament, focuses on enhancing access to quality higher education for marginalized communities through evidence-based innovation. In response to the cancellation, the foundation expressed openness to future collaborations with Poyer:
“ECMC Foundation was fortunate to be a beneficiary of Jordan Poyer’s golf tournament in Florida … Although the Foundation was not a sponsor, we have had an excellent partnership with Jordan and we respect his decision to cancel his tournament; we hope he will consider supporting us in his future events.”
The Doral golf course in Miami, Florida, owned by Trump, is renowned as a premier golf destination and consistently earns accolades as one of Florida’s finest courses. It is often hailed as a must-play experience. Nevertheless, due to political divisions, some individuals found it challenging to accept the association of the event with Trump. The prevailing sentiment among many was that this reaction was unfounded, considering that Trump’s ownership of the course held little significance. The charity event itself held far greater importance than any political disagreements.
