The Number one ranked U.S. women’s soccer team lost their Tokyo Olympic opener 3-0 to Sweden on Wednesday after all 22 athletes took a knee in support of Black Lives Matter before the game.
Megan Rapinoe and company looked like a shadow of the team that won the World Cup two years ago as they were dominated by the Swedes, who scored their first goal after twenty-five minutes and kept possession of the ball for 60% of the game.
The crushing defeat ended the U.S. team’s 44-game unbeaten streak of 40 wins and four draws, which stretched back to January 2019, when they lost 3-1 to France.
American critics online seemed thrilled by the loss after their “woke” display of protest at the beginning of the game. “Maybe less activism and more practice next time,” snarked political commentator Lauren Chen.
“Disgraceful & ungrateful. Always all about them—their woke brands are joke brands,” tweeted Fox News’ Laura Ingraham.
Babylon Bee mocked the team with satirical headlines about the game. “Inspiring: US Women’s Soccer Team To Boycott Scoring Goals Until Racism Is Defeated,” one read. Another headline claimed, “To Improve Olympic Chances, US Women’s Soccer Team Replaced By 15-Year-Old Boys Team In Wigs.”
Writer Logan Hall pointed out that the team might want to change their strategy. “Imagine the impact a patriotic top professional athlete could have right now. Huge untapped market for that,” he posted. “Naturally, fans start rooting against teams that hate the country they’re supposed to represent. A little patriotism goes a long way.”
One Twitter user summed the game up simply: “I can’t stop laughing – I hope they lose again.”

I used to take a lot of pride in the U.S. teams, going back to the days of Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, et al. Always rooted for them heartily.
