John Legend says Kanye West’s meeting with Donald Trump was a “publicity stunt.”
West met with the president-elect at Trump Tower in New York Tuesday, two weeks after his release from a Los Angeles hospital. The meeting drew tons of media attention, and according to R&B singer John Legend, that was exactly what Kanye wanted.
Kanye tweeted Tuesday afternoon he met with Trump to “discuss multicultural issues.” He further stated: “I feel it is important to have a direct line of communication with our future President if we truly want change.”
But Legend didn’t buy it, telling a European TV outlet he was “disappointed” his friend would even sit down with the soon-to-be 45th president.
“I don’t think it’s impossible to talk to him about issues, but I won’t be used as a publicity stunt. And I think Kanye was a publicity stunt,” Legend told French TV program Clique Wednesday. “I think Trump has been corrosive. His message has been corrosive to the country, and I think the things he’s promised to do have been very concerning for a lot of people. For Kanye to support that message is very disappointing.”
