Rock artist Neil Young, who launched an assault on Joe Rogan and Spotify over “vaccine misinformation” still has some music on the streaming platform, despite encouraging staffers to quit.
“To the workers at SPOTIFY, I say Daniel Ek is your big problem — not Joe Rogan,” Young wrote on his website last week. “Ek pulls the strings. Get out of that place before it eats up your soul. The only goals stated by Ek are about numbers — not art, not creativity.”
“In our communication age, disinformation is the problem,” he continued. “Ditch the misinformed. Find a good clean place to support with your monthly checks. You have real power. Use it.”
Spotify has chosen to stand behind their $100 million man, and Ek said that regardless of the controversy, he does “not believe that silencing Joe is the answer.”
Young gave the streamer an ultimatum last month, “They can have Rogan or Young. Not both.” Spotify chose Rogan, but it seems Young didn’t manage to remove all his music from the platform.
While most of his six-decade long catalog is gone from the archives, songs released by other entities, like live events and soundtracks, are still available. Notably Young’s “Heart of Gold” remains, because the “Eat, Pray, Love” soundtrack is available for streaming.
As the controversy around Rogan has evolved from spreading “misinformation” to being “consciously racist,” as fellow ex-Spotify artist India Arie referred to the podcaster, Young’s bigoted remarks of the past have came to light.
“In an interview with Melody Maker in 1985, Neil Young backed Reagan’s gun control policies and said of AIDS, ‘You go to a supermarket and you see a faggot behind the f***in’ cash register, you don’t want him to handle your potatoes,” Young said according to a Rolling Stone report in 2013.
Rogan has since apologized for his use of the N-word, calling the clips “taken out of context,” but “the most regretful and shameful thing that I’ve ever had to talk about publicly.”
