Irish singer Sinead O’Connor, famous for her hit song “Nothing Compares 2 U” in the 1990s, has passed away at 56 years old. Her rendition of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” originally by Prince, became a global sensation, and its music video has garnered nearly 400 million views on YouTube. Her family released a statement to RTE saying:

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinead. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time,”

No cause of death has been released yet.

O’Connor created a major controversy during her appearance on Saturday Night Live. After singing an a cappella version of Bob Marley’s “War,” she tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II and urged the audience to fight the real enemy. This stunt received significant backlash, but O’Connor later stated that she has no regrets about it. She believes her career was actually derailed by having a number-one record, and tearing the photo helped her get back on the right track, as expressed in her 2021 book Rememberings.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
