Tesla CEO Elon Musk added a seventh child to his massive brood with on-again, off-again girlfriend Grimes, but the same day news of their secret baby broke, she revealed they had officially split.
The 33-year-old singer divulged to Vanity Fair that she and her billionaire “boyfriend” had welcomed daughter Exa Dark Sideræl, who they call ‘Y’ for short, via surrogate in December.
Grimes, who was discussing the pair’s “fluid” relationship at her home in Austin, Texas, did not intend to reveal her daughter’s existence, but the interviewer heard the baby cry, and the singer admitted that she and Musk were co-parenting together despite living separately.
Musk and Grimes welcomed their weirdly named son, X Æ A-12, in May of 2020, and she detailed the origins of her equally oddly named daughter. Apparently, her first name, Exa, was derived from supercomputing term exaFLOPS, middle name Dark was inspired by dark matter.
“People fear it but truly it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe,” she explained, adding that Sideræl, came from “the true time of the universe, star time, deep space time, not our relative earth time.”

On the day Vanity Fair broke the story, Grimes tweeted that she and Musk had ended their romantic relationship. “Me and E have broken up *again* since the writing of this article haha, but he’s my best friend and the love of my life,” she reported.
Grimes also explained that the piece was intended to be about her upcoming album, not her personal life.
“2 clarify a few things; I did this to speak abt my work, not “reveal all” haha. Def held back a lot, contrary 2 headline. & didn’t mean for them 2 find out about my daughter so please respect her privacy as I’d love her to be able to live as private of a life as possible,” she posted.
Musk has remained mum about the dissolution of his relationship and addition of a baby. Exa is Musk’s seventh child and only daughter. He shares five other sons, including 17-year-old twins and 16-year-old triplets with his first wife Justine, who he divorced in 2008.
