Controversial country singer Morgan Wallen won Album of the Year at the 2022 Academy of Country Music Awards, and cancel culture vultures are angry that he’s not still in the doghouse.
The Nashville based artist said he was “blown away” by his fans’ support and only briefly touched on the scandal by thanking “everyone who has shown [him] grace along the way.”
Wallen, 28, blew up his career in February of last year, when his neighbor’s spy-cam caught him using the N-word, after he returned home after a 72-hour bender. He was immediately suspended by his label, dropped from radio stations, and banned from awards shows.
The country star wrote a lengthy apology on Instagram and pledged $500K to Black charities. He told GMA’s Michael Strahan that he did not mean to use the word in a hateful fashion.
“In our minds, it’s playful, you know?” Wallen explained. “I don’t know if that sounds ignorant, but that’s really where it came from. It’s wrong. … I didn’t mean it in any derogatory manner at all.”
Despite being publicly shunned, the crooner’s sophomore outing, Dangerous: The Double Album, became the highest selling record of 2021 with over 3 million copies purchased.
On Monday night, the ACM’s gave Wallen his due with the Album of the Year award, though he didn’t win either of the other two categories he was nominated for, Male Artist of the Year and Song of the Year.
While fans are thrilled for his win, “Morgan Wallen with a wayy overdue Album of the Year. Cancel culture can kiss his a–,” detractors say the award shows the music genre is hypocritical.
“So did everyone just forget that Morgan Wallen is a racist or what?” someone questioned.
“The #ACMawards just proved by allowing [Morgan Wallen] to win you can disrespect people and spew hate and still come out a winner without any consequences. Clearly there is a double standard in [country music],” one angry viewer tweeted.
Others just believe that fans of the genre are all bigoted. “Morgan Wallen wins Album of the Year. Racist country fans can rejoice!” A Twitter user snarked.
“They let Morgan Wallen win album of the year? The man who very publicly said the n word? And you give him an award?! I hate it here I really do,” complained another.
